English for shopping, ordering and bargaining

Shops are the best practice ground available. The conversations are short, predictable, and it does not matter if they go badly — you will never see that person again.

Asking about something

How much is this?
Do you have this in a larger size?
Do you have it in another colour?
Can I see that one, please?
Is this the final price?

When you're browsing

Shop assistants will ask if you need help. You do not have to say yes:

I'm just looking, thank you.
I'll come back if I need anything.

Both are polite and completely normal.

Bargaining

Bargaining in English uses softer, more indirect phrasing than in Hindi:

Can you do anything on the price?
Is there any discount if I take two?
That's a bit more than I wanted to spend.
Would you take four hundred?

That third one is the most useful sentence in the list. It says no without saying no, and it leaves the next move to them.

Paying

Do you take UPI?
Can I pay by card?
Could I have a bill, please?
Keep the change.

Returning or complaining

Harder, because it needs politeness under mild pressure:

I bought this yesterday and it doesn't fit. Can I exchange it?
There's a problem with this — it stopped working after two days.
I'd like a refund, please. Here's the bill.

Notice these are calm and factual. In English, calm is more effective than forceful — the moment you raise your voice, the person stops helping and starts defending.

Ordering food

Could I have a masala dosa, please?
Is this very spicy?
Could we get the bill?
Could I get that without onion?

Why this is worth doing

Two or three shop conversations a week is real speaking practice with a real person, zero preparation, and no consequences.

Do it for a month and the everyday transactional English — the kind that makes you feel capable in public — stops needing any thought at all.
